How This Class Can Help My Future

Hello Everybody,

This is my last and final post for the IEOR 190G Patent Engineering class at U.C. Berkeley. It is a bittersweet moment because I have worked all semester for this moment and have learned so much about patents. Going into my future work, I look forward to taking all that I have learned and applying it one day in the real world. I am an Economics major minoring in IEOR and Computer Science. One day, I hope to develop something worthwhile and so innovative that I could file a patent. This summer, I will likely be doing some work with a start up in the gaming industry which is trying to determine how to approach IP and the need for patents or not. Ideally, I will be able to help since I have developed this background over the past semester learning about obviousness, novelty, and prior art. Also, I like that we have created a blog because that allows us to have something visible to future employers should they look us up and be interested in what type of work we have done in regard to patents. I will add the link to my LinkedIn account and hopefully some people end up reading these posts. In the future, I think this knowledge will put me one step ahead of the competition because of the skills I have acquired about patents and how they work. I am very excited to patent something of my own and be the very first to file and go through all the necessary steps in receiving the patent. Thank you to all that have been a part of this class, I have learned so much from you input on my blog and YouTube videos and look forward to taking more classes in the IEOR department as to better my information about patents and the tech industry in general. The tech industry has always been of interest because my father works in it and I think it would be a fantastic place to start my career. This summer, I will be working in real estate in San Francisco and hopefully get some hands on experience with the tech industry that surrounds us. Thanks again to the professor!

  1. Hi Kyle,

I think its awesome that you will be able to apply some of the concepts of what we learned in class to your summer position in working in the gaming industry. This is definitely an industry where filing patents is becoming controversial due to the volatile nature of games and whether certain software elements within these games are worth patenting. Hopefully the insight that you gained from this class will provide some sort of foundational use for the company. A lot of classes in Berkeley prepare us to get our majors, but not a whole lot prepare us for the world outside of this school. I think this class definitely does because of how we were taught, the interactive nature behind the entire class, and the overall concepts being so directly applicable to all actions taken within a tech company. I agree with you in the sense that I can truly see now how well this class served in terms of professional development for those wanting to enter the tech industry.

  2. Hey Kyle,

Great to hear that you are minoring in IEOR and Computer Science. You would be able to definitely apply the knowledge we gained in this class to your future career. I am an Economics major too and hope that we can both apply the things we learned in this class on our future fields. I am glad to hear that you learned a lot and I really appreciate the passion and effort Dr. Lavian put for us to learn a lot of things about patents through collaborative social media learning.

It has been a pleasure reading your blog and watching your youtube videos this semester, thank you I learned alot. I'm glad you learned a lot from the class and are able to apply it to the real world. The information we learned about patents can definitely be combined with your background in economics and computer science and it'll make you a more well rounded person. Good luck with your summer internship!

  4. Great post Kyle! Loved how you focused on how employers would appreciate candidates with patent knowledge, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I never thought about using this blog as a testament to our knowledge, but it is a very interesting idea that I will definitely explore.
